Building Justice and equality for pastoralists
We work with marginalized pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya to secure right and build resilience.
About the organization
The Pastoralists Rights and Advocacy Network (ParaNET) is a grassroots, non-sectarian, non-governmental organization based in Wajir, Northern Kenya. Established in December 2007, ParaNET was founded to address the systemic marginalization of pastoralist communities across northern Kenya. The organization focuses on vulnerable and underserved groups, particularly women, girls, and children, with a mission to advance access to justice, strengthen civic participation, and defend human dignity through community-led advocacy and empowerment.
Pastoralist communities bear the brunt of the climate crisis, facing recurrent droughts, floods, and shrinking grazing lands that threaten their livelihoods, food security, and overall well-being. Recognizing these growing challenges, ParaNET has increasingly integrated climate action into its work, championing climate justice and resilience in ways that are grounded in Kenya’s Climate Change Act (2016) and the National Climate Change Response Strategy. Our approach combines practical interventions with advocacy to strengthen the capacity of communities to withstand climate-related risks and safeguard their long-term survival and dignity.

Entrenched Exclusion

Why Translating the Kenyan Constitution Matters for Marginalized Communities
Twelve years after Kenya adopted a progressive Constitution, many marginalized communities, including the Somali in northern Kenya, still struggle to access it in a language they understand. Without translations into local languages, crucial rights like public participation, education, and legal protection remain out of reach, leaving communities feeling excluded and invisible
